Amine-based hydrogen sulfide (H2S) scavengers have been used in crude oil production and refining for many years minimizing the potential exposure to H2S emanating from crude oil and other H2S bearing hydrocarbon streams. In recent years, the use of amine-based H2S scavengers has increased due to increasing regulations and safety concerns. Within the Petroleum and Refining Industry, there is much debate regarding the use of amine-based scavenging compounds with regard to crude tower fouling and corrosion. This paper discusses the chemistry and fate of two commonly used triazine H2S scavengers and their reaction by-products with respect to their impact on crude unit overhead corrosion and fouling. Both laboratory and field data and the chemistry involved are presented in an attempt to explain recent anecdotal field observations within the Industry.
