06497 EFFECT OF WELDING RELATED MICROSTRUCTURE ON STRESS CORROSION CRACKING SUSCEPTIBILITY IN CAUSTIC SOLUTIONS

Stress Corrosion Cracking in the weld and heat affected zones of Duplex Stainless Steels has been experienced in different industries.  In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the various aspects of this type of corrosion, brought about by welding.  Results show duplex stainless steel base metal is also susceptible.

Stress Corrosion Cracking in the weld and heat affected zones of Duplex Stainless Steels has been experienced in different industries. Welding can produce changes in the microstructure, especially in the heat affected zones of duplex stainless steels. Welding parameters, such as type of weld, composition of filler metal, heat input and number of passes may affect the dual microstructure of the steel, which in turn may affect its mechanical properties and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the various aspects of this type of corrosion, brought about by welding. Susceptibility of duplex stainless steel to stress corrosion cracking in caustic containing sulfide environment has been studied. Results indicate that duplex stainless steel base metal is also susceptible to caustic stress corrosion cracking at high temperatures.

Keywords: duplex stainless steels, welding, white liquor, pulp and paper industry, stress corrosion cracking, microstructure, ferrite number
