Recent Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) regulations have increased inspection and safety standards for hazardous liquid pipelines in high consequence areas. The same standards are expected to be applied to gas transmission systems, and will include continuous evaluation through internal inspections (ILI), pressure testing, and direct assessment of pipeline integrity. As pipeline infrastructures age, inspection and maintenance programs are vital to maintaining pipeline integrity and promoting longevity. This paper will focus on the use of Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) related methods to enhance internal corrosion assessment and ensure pipeline integrity, as well as the challenges of implementing this method to pipeline risk management. A case history will illustrate the challenges of implementation, including validation and application of the ICDA method for gas transmission pipelines, the process for information integration as it relates to internal corrosion direct assessment, and the GIS component of implementing the ICDA method into a company’s integrity management plan.
