This paper will review case histories of different options in addressing corrosion under insulation in maintenance situations. The most effective approach to in-plant maintenance painting involves containment of the equipment or pipe, dry abrasive blast cleaning, and application of a suitable coating system. This approach provides the best coating quality and long-term performance. The more common approach is to forgo containment and to do hand or power tool cleaning, followed by the application of a coating system appropriate for the grade of surface preparation. This approach has advantages in that it is simpler, faster and less expensive; however, coating quality and performance is sacrificed. A new and innovative method of utilizing airline de-icing compounds and covering the substrates with petrolatum tape is being used for cold thermal insulation systems. Circumstances and background conditions for each of these options are discussed. Background conditions for each of these options are discussed.
