00588 STAINLESS STEELS IN CHLORINE DIOXIDE ENVIRONMENTS - PREDICTING THE POSSIBILITY OF PITTING

Dependencies of the possibility of pitting on temperature and the chloride and sulfate contents of the environment were determined for stainless steels UNS S31726 and UNS S31254 using laboratory experiments with a strongly oxidizing chlorine dioxide environment.

Dependencies of the possibility of pitting on temperature and the chloride and sulfate contents of the environment were determined for stainless steels UNS S31726 and UNS S31254 using laboratory experiments with a strongly oxidizing chlorine dioxide environment. In the experiments, the steel specimens were in contact with wet pulp containing controlled amounts of chloride and sulfate. Results of tests with mill grown pulp deposits are compared with ones where pulp sheets were used. The conditions in real bleach processes were characterized by measuring temperatures and electrode potentials in two vacuum drum washers in a Finnish pulp mill, and by determining the chloride and sulfate contents and the electrical conductivity of waters extracted from pulp deposits formed on shower pipes of the washers. Possibilities of predicting the risk of attack by measuring the values of the critical variables in real process environments are discussed. Keywords: stainless steel, pitting, chloride, sulfate, chlorine dioxide, critical pitting temperature
