Metals and their alloys offer high strength and outstanding mechanical properties. When exposed to corrosive conditions metals corrode first creating minor aesthetic problems then with time and further corrosion significant damage and a loss of service life. Corrosion has a demonstrated economic impact on all modern societies. Often multi-layer anticorrosion coatings systems protect the metal from corrosion.
These systems usually consist of, at a minimum, a primer and a topcoat. Each layer is often derived from a different chemistry to achieve different system objectives. The application of multiple layers increases the cost and complexity of the job. Variables such as dry time, individual layer film thickness, recoat window, equipment and work area changeover all create additional complexity.
A common frustration in our industry is the project submittal process. Engineers, Consultants, owners and manufactures are frustrated by the process. How do you really know what products are right for your project? Data from recent studies show that projects where two or more manufacturers’ products are specified, results in overall project savings of 23% or more. This demands a closer look at the selection and specification process.

In 2003 Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) conducted a study to quantify the throughput and cost savings potential of a PAS two-coat system versus a three-coat system. The study showed that a PAS two-coat system had a 31% increase in productivity and direct cost savings of approximately $6 per square foot, with indirect cost savings of $18 per square foot when including the benefits of reduced traffic congestion.17 PAS two-coat systems utilize a zinc-rich primer for galvanic protection; the epoxy and polyurethane layers are replaced by a high-build PAS topcoat.
With more stringent silica regulations being enforced, wet abrasive blasting is becoming more prevalent in the industry. We investigated the viability of wet abrasive blasting as compared to the more commonly used dry abrasive blast. One added benefit of wet abrasive blasting is the removal of soluble salts in addition to providing the specified profile.
