The role of partial pressure ratio of CO2/H2S is often used to define whether the system is sweet and controlled by the partial pressure of CO2 or sour and controlled by the partial pressure of H2S, however, this greatly simplifies the role that partial pressure plays in the corrosion processes. This paper offers an overview of the complete role that partial pressure ratio plays in determining the controlling processes in oil and gas production systems. In particular, the paper reviews the role of partial pressure in determining, the solution pHdominant water chemistry speciescontrolling corrosion reactionprevalent corrosion productsour service regimeThe presentation is intended to be a consistent and unified view of the relationships between partial pressure, water chemistry and corrosion product solubility.
In any operating facility, the integrity of flare or relief lines should always be closely maintained, as it is one of the most important safeguards during plant upsets or emergency conditions. The most common damage mechanism in acid flare lines is acid gas dew point corrosion”. Corrosion in such systems is often dependent on fluid stagnation, especially in the presence of acidic water, during idle conditions. The intent of this paper is to shed light on the efforts done in a gas treatment facility to identify different root causes that impacted or accelerated Acid Gas Dew Point Corrosion. These included design deficiencies, equipment integrity, and process challenges. Moreover, the paper provides findings and recommendations to avoid the occurrence of similar events in acid flare lines.
