Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is injected in the pipelines to prevent hydrate formation which is a flow assurance concern. Recent investigations indicated that presence of MEG could impede CO2 corrosion of carbon steel although many aspects remain unknown.In the current study experiments were conducted under in a Hasteloy autoclave at 80 100 and 120oC. The partial pressure of CO2 was kept constant at 10 bars. Test solution was MEG/standard brine at different ratios of 80/20 50/50 10/90 and 0/100. Electrochemical techniques such as linear polarization resistance and potentiodynamic polarization were employed to investigate the corrosion rate and phenomenon. In addition corrosion rate of the specimens was confirmed using weight loss tests. Corroded surface of the samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques.This research aims to provide an improved insight on contribution of MEG on CO2 corrosion of carbon steel at elevated temperatures.
