THE IMPACT OF COATING SYSTEMS ON THE TECHNOLOGY REQUIRED TO SUSTAIN US AIR FORCE SYSTEMS DoD

It is well known that corrosion has a significant impact on sustainment, system costs, and system availability to the warfighter. Mitigating such impacts is one of the greatest drivers to DoD Science &Technology (S&T) requirements and therefore research programs.

It is well known that corrosion has a significant impact on sustainment, system costs, and system availability to the warfighter. Mitigating such impacts is one of the greatest drivers to DoD Science &Technology (S&T) requirements and therefore research programs. The US Air Force Academy’s Center for Aircraft Structural Life Extension (CAStLE) is an entirely customer funded DoD research entity which, through its close ties with the USAF sustainment community, has constant insight into the S&T challenges that are most critical to USAF system managers. In close cooperation with their customers, CAStLE develops and executes research projects that successfully address these S&T challenges with appropriate products, data, and tools in a budget-constrained environment. This presentation will offer an overview of some of the current coatings related research along with some coatings successes in war against corrosion.
