Corrosion engineers and paint applicators are familiar with the merits of sandblasting as surface preparation before the application of protective coatings. But there are instances when sandblasting is not feasible because the resultant flying sand particles and drifting dust could cause contamination of adjacent mechanical equipment and low areas. In those instances, water blasting may provide an adequate degree of cleaning. Unlike sandblasting, water blasting has no etching effect on steel or other hard surfaces and therefore is recommended primarily in maintenance painting programs.  Historical Document 1972
