In the late part of the 1980’s, the inventor worked with the reflective coating companies that made “NASA ceramic paints”. During this time that he worked with the reflective companies, he learned that the formulas used for reflective paints were not made from NASA technology and were only good for light reflection. When the coatings became dirty or tarnished, the coatings did not reflect heat.
In the oil and gas industry there is information on current fundamental training for contractors and certification programs that cover industry standards and practical aspects of selecting, specifying and using coatings safely, effectively and economically to protect structures in harsh oil and gas atmospheric environments. These certification programs are for both inspectors and contractors that provide quality assurance/quality control on industrial coating projects. Once implemented with a properly well-written specification for a specific substrate (steel, metal, previously coated), ensures a quality project for the owner.

Third Generation Polysiloxane (TGPS) ambient curing CUI mitigation coatings have been used in the petrochemical industry for over five years since the “third generation” concept was introduced at NACE Corrosion 2017. These coating technologies have demonstrated positive results in both shop and field application for asset management in elevated temperature, cryogenic and cyclic applications across -196 to 650o C/ -321 to 1200o F operational temperatures. TGPS coatings have also demonstrated effective use of a two-step (primer-insulation) CUI mitigation coating approach operating up to 400o C/750o F, when compared to the traditional (CUI coating-fibrous insulation-cladding) systems.
Zinc-rich coatings have long been known to provide excellent corrosion resistance in highly corrosive environments, in general, inorganic zincs for new construction and organic zincs for maintenance. A recent trend has been toward zinc-rich coatings with reduced levels of zinc dust. An SSPC committee formed to revise SSPC Paint 29, Zinc Dust Sacrificial Primer, Performance Based, to reference performance only, removing reference to minimum zinc dust level.
