Significant reduction of corrosion induced pipe failure in Oilsands/SAGD facilities using PEX-a polymeric Pipe MaterialsYosi Bar Mech.Eng.BSc.Golan Plastic Products Sr. Application Engineer +972-523864012 yosibar@golan-plastic.comAviv M Scheinman BSc MBAGolan Plastic Products Product Manager +972-506505873 aviv@golan-plastic.comABSTRACTFor the last 25 Years Crossed linked Polymer materials have been allowing Maintenance and Operations Engineers a cost effective tool for solving material transportation reliability problems with a corrosion resistant pipe. The Oilsands/SAGD industry recognize that Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA's) and Polymeric materials are the best solutions to mitigate the corrosive effects of process media.Recent installations at Oilsands operations in Canada have demonstrated that PEX-a cross linked polymeric pipe materials are a logical choice for transporting corrosive materials operating at increased temperatures offering both reduced capital and operational costs. PEX-a materials are a very cost effective alternative to CRA's and can provide 50+ year reliability. This paper details the history of Cross linked PEX-a piping materials the enhanced material properties of PEX-a materials case studies of successful installations in corrosive media in Canada and abroad and practical piping solutions for applications from 2" and up.Additionally discussions will cover the use of PEX-a materials in pipeline remediation both as a snug fit liner and as a pressure containing inserted pipe. Keywords: Corrosion Cross linked Polymer Pipe Oilsands operators PEX-a Liner Enhanced Material Properties.
