This recommended practice discusses hot- and cold-applied wax coatings and component wrappers and wax-tape coating systems used for the protection of underground piping. Any reference to wax tape and wax primer may also apply to petrolatum tape and petrolatum primer. This recommended practice also outlines proper methods of surface preparation, coating application, and handling of the coated pipe. Tables 1 through 4 indicate requirements and test methods for the various materials discussed.

This recommended practice may be used as a standard for petroleum wax-based protective coatings, wrappers, and tapes for underground pipelines. It covers the various wax coating materials used in the protection of underground piping systems for industry.

NACE Standard RP0375-75 was originally developed for the application of hot-applied and cold applied wax coatings in 1975. It superseded NACE Publication 2L 161, "Tentative Recommended Minimum Requirements for Hot-Applied Wax-Type Protective Coatings and Wrappers for Underground Pipelines." In the intervening years, the recommended practice was reviewed, but no changes were made. During the latest review, it was determined that the recommended practice should include wax-tape coatings.

The current revision of the recommended practice was prepared in 1994 by NACE International Task Group T-10D-16, a component of Unit Committee T-10D on Protective Coating Systems, and is issued by NACE International under the auspices of Group Committee T-10 on Underground Corrosion Control.

 1.1 This recommended practice covers hot-applied wax and component wrappers, cold-applied wax and component wrappers, and wax-tape coating systems for the protection of underground pipe, fittings, and valves. It also discusses proper methods of surface preparation, coating application, and handling of the coated pipe.

1.2 These systems are designed to provide protection against corrosive environments.

1.3 Material requirements are delineated for hot-applied waxes, cold-applied waxes, component wrappers, and wax tapes.

1 .4 Hot-applied wax coatings may be applied by machine as a line-travel operation in the field or by hand. Cold applied wax and wax-tape coatings are applied only by hand. These coatings may be used on new piping or for coating rehabilitation.
