This NACE Standard Recommended Practice was prepared by NACE Task Group T-10-1, composed of corrosion consultants, corrosion control personnel from oil and gas transmission companies, gas distribution companies, power companies, communications companies, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the National Bureau of Standards, the Department of Transportation, the American Water Works Association, representatives from steel, cast iron, copper, and aluminum piping manufacturers, and coating applicators, manufacturers, and others concerned with corrosion control. The Standard is issued by NACE under the auspices of Group Committee T-10 on Underground Corrosion Control. The purpose of this Recommended Practice is to present procedures and practices for achieving effective control of external corrosion on buried or submerged metallic piping systems. These recommendations are also applicable to many other buried or submerged metallic structures. The Recommended Practice describes the use of electrically insulating coatings, electrical isolation, and cathodic protection as corrosion control methods. It contains specific provisions for the application of cathodic protection to existing bare, existing coated, and new piping systems. Also included are procedures for control of interference currents on pipelines. This Recommended Practice does not include corrosion control methods based on chemical control of the environment or on the use of electrically conductive coatings. Historical Document 1983
