Since the 1980s, fluoropolymer resin technologies have offered the possibility of a quantum improvement in topcoat decorative properties- gloss and color retention- compared to conventional acrylic and polyester resins. Restoration of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Bristol, Maine
Cleaning, restoration and conservation of murals and decorative paintings are three vastly different definitions. Murals get dirty over time. To wash them with a non-invasive cleanser is to “clean” them. You could clean a mural with de-ionized water or mild cleansers. Blowing the dust off with light compressed air, soft bristle brushing or chemical sponging is also considered cleaning. Once we step from a surface dirt removal to a yellowed varnish removal, or penetrated dirt removal, we have entered the conservator’s field.
The repair and restoration of deteriorated wood siding, trim, and ornamental plaster on the exteriors of older buildings is one of the cornerstones of what is called a “Painting Restoration”. From the symptoms of paint failure, one can determine the underlying causes, and then decide upon the proper cures.
Formerly a hot-spot destination for well-known figures such as U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Joe Louis, and Al Capone, French Lick Springs Resort in Indiana was in recent need of some reviving. This historic hotel appointed Conrad Schmitt Studios to initiate a restorative transformation including decorative treatments such as metal leaf applications and murals. The resurrection of the grand, historic French Lick Springs Resort is enhanced with a new casino. Now that the restoration is complete, the drawing power of French Lick Springs Resort is on the rise again.
Industry executives involved in industrial blasting and coating projects may find it surprising that climate control equipment typically used in those processes played a major role in recovery efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. This paper highlights how this equipment helped restore three important structures in New Orleans – the Louisiana Superdome, Notarial Archives and the evidence room of the New Orleans Police Department.
Well-formulated fluorocarbon paints can last for decades, but when repair is needed or a color change is desired, it can sometimes be a challenge to choose the right coating system to use on top of the fluorocarbon. This presentation will discuss new VOC-compliant options that have become available which not only stick to fluorocarbon paints, but also offer a quantum improvement in color fade resistance.
In the 1920's the Ford Motor Company commissioned architect Albert Kahn to design regional automobile assembly plants. The largest on the West Coast was built in Richmond CA. With over 500,000 square feet of floor space under one roof it is still today the largest single building on San Francisco Bay. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake this National Historic Building was severely damaged to the point that it could not be occupied. This paper tells the tale of how due to incredible time restraints an Olympian effort was needed to retrofit and restore this national treasure to a usable commercial building.
The Atlanta Hyatt boasts 1,260 guest rooms and just over 180,000 square feet of ballroom and exhibit space. Using the construction technology and trends of the time, the exterior surfaces of the hotel were constructed of exposed river rock aggregate consolidated concrete walls. This was a popular building material, but one that often left gaps of uneven areas where the river rocks were not evenly distributed.
An iron fence, started in 1873, with gates and some modest ornamentation was constructed in nearby Lafayette and assembled on the site of the historic battle. Built by “Thomas Harding, Contractor and Builder,” the fence surrounds the historic battlefield, and serves as a monument to the memory of those that fought and died there.
Restoration of steel and concrete surfaces has relied heavily on sandblasting and other dry blasting techniques. For over a century, dry blasting has been an effective, but dusty approach in removing coatings, contaminants, corrosion, and residues, with emissions of silica and other abrasive or substrate particles linked to negative health and environmental impacts.
