This paper will describe this commonplace corrosion problem associated with protective coating damage at dissimilar metal bolted connections and present a typical case history. The paper will go on to explain why slotted bolt holes are more susceptible to more aggressive corrosion damage than round bolt holes. In addition, the paper will present successful measures that can be taken to prevent this prevalent problem.
Financial resources for maintenance of coatings systems for owners of steel bridges are at a premium. Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize and choose the scope of services for maintenance painting of these structures in the most efficient manner. This paper will present the fundamental steps necessary for a detailed condition assessment of the existing coatings of steel bridges.
Many times, concrete coating projects are approached similarly to those of other paintable substrates, like steel or wood. The primary and sometimes only, focus is to provide a visibly clean and sound surface. More experienced design professionals will ensure that voids are filled, protrusions are ground to plane, and the correct surface profile is achieved. Once prepared, a serviceable coating system is applied (always as per the manufacturer’s recommendations) and no one looks back… unless there is a failure.
Coating performance and longevity is highly dependent on the quality of substrate surface preparation. The effect of profile height, profile type (e.g., type of tool used to perform the prep, angularity of profile, etc.), extent of cleanliness, and amount of chloride contamination on coating performance were all studied to determine the correlation between these factors in an attempt to identify the primary factor in coating failure due to improper surface preparation.
