The paper will go on to explain why slotted bolt holes are more susceptible to more aggressive corrosion damage than round bolt holes. In addition, the paper will present successful measures that can be taken to prevent this prevalent problem.
This paper will describe this commonplace corrosion problem associated with protective coating damage at dissimilar metal bolted connections and present a typical case history. The paper will go on to explain why slotted bolt holes are more susceptible to more aggressive corrosion damage than round bolt holes. In addition, the paper will present successful measures that can be taken to prevent this prevalent problem. Those measures include proper coating system selection, the use of non-metallic washers with stainless steel washers, reducing the number of bolted connections, and application of a flexible polysulfide sealant to seal bolted connections following proper coating application.

Substrate preparation which includes the removal of contaminates, abrading or etching to create a surface profile via mechanical or chemical methods have a major impact on the adhesion performance of applied coatings. For coatings, a primary performance characteristic is adhesion after exposure to corrosive environments. One of the consequences of corrosion forming under a coating is the loss of adhesion or delamination of the coating.
Details of a new protocol for evaluating the effectiveness of coatings to reduce corrosion of steel structures is presented in this paper. Basic concepts of accelerated testing specified in American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards and recent research investigations were used to develop a procedure that can provide conclusive results within 2400 hours of exposure as compared to more than 5000 hours in current practices.
