The BNY Mellon faced the considerable challenge of repainting the exterior of the 54-story, metal sided One Mellon Center located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of the downtown, traditional methods of surface preparation and coating application were not viable options. BNY Mellon took the unusual approach of designing the entire project, from the means and methods, to equipment & staging versus the more traditional process of letting a painting contractor design the work sequence and approach.
Coatings designed for heavy duty applications in the Marine & Protective Coatings market are exposed to aggressive environments such as strong chemical solvents, marine atmospheres, UV light, abrasion, among others. Nowadays, the major part of the commercially available products that target this industry are solvent borne.
There are many products which protect structural steel from corrosion. There is also an intense focus on sustainability. Hot-dip galvanizing is one product that provides economical, long-lived, and sustainable corrosion protection. It is also more durable than most other barrier systems. Not all steel can be galvanized because sometimes the elements are too long and/or too heavy to be placed in the baths.
