SINTEF (a Norwegian research Co.) made studies of the sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of super 13Cr martensitic stainless steels. These tests are summarised in this paper. Both slow strain rate (SSR), 4-point-bend and fracture mechanics testing have been conducted. The effect of temperature, cathodic protection (CP), applied potential, strain rate and H2S were investigated.
Much progress has been made in testing of offshore paint systems in the past 10 years. But more work is needed to understand what is happening and give us the confidence to correlate the laboratory accelerated test to the field service life of offshore coating systems. The new NACE Standards are a move in the right direction.
This work was undertaken to explore the possibility to extend the limits of 316L to higher temperatures. The large scale test consists of a full ring pipe which is stressed externally and exposed internally to the test fluid. The small scale tests are four-point-bend (4PB) tests in accordance with ISO15156-31 and EFC172.
For pipe installed through bore methods, visual inspections and electronic coating holiday detectors during installation becomes impractical. This paper/presentation will discuss the steps we took as a pipeline operator to find a practical approach to performing a coating quality test on bored pipe.
