Within the Wastewater Treatment process the growth of soft fouling materials (algae) create problems such as Total Suspended Solids issues, false BOD readings, clogged pumps, and reduced flow rates through the weirs of clarifiers. Furthermore, dead or dying algae can cause additional odor concerns. This phenomenon has cost municipalities and taxpayer’s untold amounts of money due to the required maintenance dollars spent to correct this problem.
Duplex coatings are used to protect galvanizing in harsh environments, provide aesthetics, and enhance corrosion protection. Surface preparation is critical to achieving long term performance, and abrasive blasting was found to be the most effective surface preparation technique.
Concrete is the second most common man-made material after potable water, yet it is a complex material that is poorly understood. Steel reinforcement is added to improve the concrete's tensile strength and ductility and is initially protected by the high concrete pH and depth of cover concrete. Eventually, due to the ingress of deleterious ions, lowering of the pH from carbonation, or electrical potential changes within the steel, corrosion will occur.
The use of sustainable materials in the flooring market has gained widespread interest in recent years. Bio based raw materials contribute significantly to these efforts and are used to prepare environmentally friendly coatings. Castor oil-based emulsions are used as polyols in waterborne polyurethane coatings. These systems have outstanding chemical resistance and good durability. But they have inherent issues like very short pot life, poor appearance / flow properties, and delayed early hardness development.
Brief Background Throughout the last decades, coatings science has incorporated very versatile inorganic materials into organic coating to form the inorganic/organic hybrid coating systems. Combining various organic and inorganic constituents in combination with different preparation and processing methods, very versatile materials can be produced for optical, structural and coatings applications. The hybrid products have combined the properties of the inorganic materials, i.e., hardness, durability, and thermal stability, and organic polymers, i.e., flexibility and toughness.
