ON THE TOPOGRAPHICAL AND PERFORMANCE EFFECTS OF REBLASTING A PREVIOUSLY PREPARED STEEL SUBSTRATE

Of recent interest in the coatings world, is what to do when an abrasive blasted substrate does not meet the specified profile. For example, if the blast profile on a steel surface exceeds the specification limit, can the surface be reblasted with smaller abrasive blast media to reduce the profile into meeting the specification? At SSPC 2017 a paper was presented which addressed this scenario and found that the profile can be reduced using such reblasting process.

At SSPC 2017 a paper was presented which addressed this scenario and found that the profile can be reduced using such reblasting process. The paper looked at the topography of the reblasting scenario, but performance property comparisons, in particular accelerated corrosion properties, between the original over-blast surface and the reblast surface were not studied. This study presented here, takes the next logical step in understanding the effects of reblasting surfaces that were in an original over-blast condition. The topography of the original over-blast condition is compared to the reblast condition using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and digital optical microscopy (DOM) looking for conditions that may affect the performance of the coated surface. Accelerated corrosion properties are then compared of the over-blast vs. reblast conditions to determine if the reblasting has deleterious effects on the coated substrate.
