Nonskid coatings are a complex coating system containing aggregates which help provide a slip-resistant deck in walk areas or vehicle traffic areas and most importantly aviation decks. The requirements for this aggressive high-tech safety feature must meet the manufacturer’s specifications which gives required ranges by way of profile depth, wet film thickness, and dry film thickness minimums and maximums, allowable application ambient conditions, and also re-coat windows for any particular coating to ensure maximum coatings life longevity. 

Nonskid is a heavy aggregated polyamine epoxy that cannot be applied with traditional coating application methods.

 Silicone alkyds are single-component (1K) systems and do not require the mixing of components before application. These systems are easy for sailors to apply (via brush or roll), have an indefinite pot-life in a closed can, and will cure under harsh marine conditions, which are why these coatings have been utilized on the exterior topsides of Navy surface ships since the early 1960s. However, these “user friendly” coatings provide limited color and gloss retention, limited resistance to shipboard hydrocarbons, and limited resistance to staining from running rust and soot.

Qualified U.S. Navy nonskid coatings are two-component (2K) epoxy-based systems that contain various sizes of aggregate. Once mixed, these highly viscous coatings are applied using a napless roller to generate a “peak and valley” profile that provides skid/slip-resistance when cured. The roll-application process is slow and inconsistent, and appearance is often determined by experience of the applicator.
