New Solvent-Free Waterborne Epoxy Resin Dispersion for Low VOC 2-Pack Protective Coatings

Solventborne 2-pack (2K) epoxy-amine coating systems have for many years been commonly used to formulate high performance protective coatings such as metal anti-corrosion primers and concrete floor coatings. However, due to the concerns linked to their high volatile organic compounds (VOC) contents, waterborne alternatives with comparable performance are needed.

Most existing waterborne epoxy dispersions still contain a significant amount of solvents, including benzyl alcohol, limiting the flexibility to formulate low VOC coatings and adjustment of other performance properties. A solvent-free, waterborne solid epoxy resin dispersion with very good shear stability has recently been developed to meet the needs of the protective coating markets. This epoxy dispersion is versatile and can be partnered with various waterborne hardeners to formulate very low VOC systems for both topcoat and primer applications where 2K epoxy performance is required. For example, high performance 2K epoxy metal primers can be formulated, with anti-corrosion performance comparable to a solventborne 2K epoxy system. In addition, anti-corrosive pigment- free systems can be obtained which is desirable since zinc phosphate and other zinc-based salts are causing environmental concerns. Furthermore, this new resin can also be used for fast drying concrete topcoats or primers, where it does not only exhibit very good chemical resistance properties, but also a very low VOC content ranging from <5g/L to <100g/L and good pot-lifes. Comparing to existing solventborne coatings, this new resin can help reducing VOC emission and human exposure to organic solvents especially during interior applications.
