In the construction of a 400 km gas pipeline system, thirty (30) pipe strings (approximately 26 km) were exposed to atmospheric conditions and rain flooded for 1-2 years. The pipe is 56”, uncoated carbon steel. Prior to their application in gas pipeline construction, the inspection detected uniform internal corrosion in some strings, but no signs of pitting corrosion were observed.

Aging pipeline assets are a concern for many pipeline operators. As pipelines age, external corrosion control becomes more challenging and often results in more aggressive monitoring and maintenance activities such as more frequent in-line inspections (ILI) and direct examinations. A pipeline case study is discussed demonstrating how a digital twin based on mechanistic modeling was utilized as a proof of concept for identifying possible cathodic protection remedial actions to decrease external corrosion growth rates (CGR) with the goal of extending the ILI inspection interval from 3 to 5 years. Various remediations such as adjusting or adding cathodic protection and resolving interference are modeled and compared with the existing corrosion control configuration. An economic analysis is included to determine if theoretical remediations can reduce monitoring and maintenance costs while maintaining asset integrity.

A fit for purpose qualification of new corrosion inhibitors was carried out for in a gas and condensate field. The depth of production well is 4,500 m and the bottom hole temperature and pressure are 180ºC and 50 MPa respectively. The methodology and result of the inhibitor evaluation under a sweet condition was summarized. Two brands of corrosion inhibitors had been used each for production tubing and flowline in the field. New corrosion inhibitors were evaluated for the both applications. The corrosion inhibitor efficiency for high shear service and the adhesion tendency were evaluated with a rotating cage autoclave and a dip and drip experiment respectively. In order to evaluate the tendency of emulsion forming, oil, brine and an inhibitor were poured into a centrifuge tube and it was shaken intensely. Gas chromatograph - mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were studied to measure the residual amount of inhibitor. Finally, the field trial was conducted with a new inhibitor. The new inhibitor was adopted successfully for the both services. The risk of emulsion forming became lower because the mixing of two brands of inhibitors was avoided. Reducing the number of the chemicals contributed to reduction of the operation cost too.

Top of line corrosion (TLC) is a degradation mechanism predominantly encountered in the oil and gas industry. Initiation of TLC requires a stratified flow regime with wet gas transportation and the existence of a significant temperature gradient between the hot fluid inside the pipeline and the colder external environment.1,2,3 This temperature difference results in the condensation of water vapor, present in the gas phase, onto the cooler, upper internal section of the pipeline. The condensed water can be particularly aggressive as it lacks dissolved salts (e.g. bicarbonates), some of which are able to buffer the bulk electrolyte, increasing the pH and suppressing corrosivity.4,5,6 The absence of such salts typically results in a very low pH condensate (<pH 4), often containing dissolved acidic gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and also acetic acid (HAc), which can cause severe degradation, particularly in the form of localized corrosion.5

To properly understand the necessary steps in implementing corrosion modeling into existing CFD software, it is necessary to verify the accuracy of the corrosion predictions made by the software. To do this, simulations are created that replicate experimental work performed in well understood geometries. The corrosion models are implemented in these simulations, and the resulting corrosion rates, as well as hydrodynamic and mass transfer characterizations, are compared to results from the experimental work. Presented herein is work investigating corrosion phenomena in a thin channel flow cell apparatus, as well as single phase straight pipe flow. In both geometries hydrodynamics, mass transfer, and electrochemistry have been simulated at a variety of conditions; the accuracy of the results were confirmed through comparison with experimental data and well tested correlations. Both geometries showed a high degree of agreement between the simulations and the experimental work, indicating that the methodology is viable to be used in other geometries.

Residual elements (RE) in carbon steel, not specifically included in the specified steel, appear to influence the corrosion rate under certain conditions, especially in services involving hydrofluoric acid (HF). The relative proportions of RE, specifically %C, %Ni, %Cu, and %Cr in carbon steel base and weld metals used in refineries, especially in alkylation processes with HF as the catalyst, significantly impact corrosion behavior. Studies described in the literature show corrosion damage with high RE (Cu + Ni + Cr >0.20) components as compared to low RE (Cu + Ni + Cr <0.20) components.

In this study, electrochemical corrosion testing was performed on a 3-inch pipe elbow section with high REs that had developed a through-wall leak in service. Test results were compared to those obtained on a similar pipe elbow section with lower REs. The samples were exposed to 50% HF at room temperature and at 65°C. Linear polarization resistance (LPR) corrosion rates were measured at both temperatures. Potentiodynamic (PD) polarization scans were performed on samples of low and high RE steel exposed to 50% HF at room temperature.

Test results indicated that LPR corrosion rates were higher for the high RE carbon steel samples than for low RE carbon steel samples at both temperatures. PD scans showed that the critical current densities were higher for high RE steel than for low RE steel.

construction was observed. The copper tube was being installed to transport medical-grade gasses and the sealant was used as an acoustical and smoke sealant at through-wall penetrations. In some areas of one facility, galvanized steel pipes inserts were used as sleeves for the copper pipes through the drywall, while in other areas, the copper pipe penetrated directly through the drywall. Observations of the discoloration prompted an evaluation of the copper tube, sealant, and potential adverse interactions.

In the Netherlands, a large drinking water distribution system exists which composes of a complex network of underground pipes owned by several water companies. Part of the drinking water distributions pipes consist of cast iron pipes of which some have been installed more than 80 years ago.¹ To prevent leaks, it is desirable to have insight into the condition of these pipes and the risk of leakages or even pipe bursts. During local replacements and maintenance work, corrosion is regularly found in the pipes and previous research⁷ has indicated that Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) may be involved in this corrosion that is found in the pipes.
