The nuclear waste disposal concept in Finland is based on a multi-barrier system where the spent nuclear fuel is disposed of in deep crystalline bedrock in copper canisters surrounded by clay buffer. The copper canisters should have lifetimes exceeding 100 000 years to prevent the release of radioactive nuclides to the environment. In anoxic water such as the ground water at the disposal site the corrosion of copper should be extremely slow. However microbial activity on the surface or in the vicinity of the copper canister can enhance corrosion in many different ways e.g. changing the pH or redox potential excretion of corrosive metabolites direct or indirect reduction or oxidation of corrosion products and formation of biofilms that create corrosive microenvironmentsIn this study microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) of copper was studied using electrochemical methods weight loss measurements and molecular biology methods in laboratory environment. The experiment was conducted under anoxic conditions in water simulating the groundwater of disposal site. Inoculations of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) acetogenic bacteria or methanogenic archaea enriched from the disposal site were added to the experiments. A sterilized abiotic environment was used as a reference environment.

The Next Generation of Double Bottom Tank Cathodic Protection

A new and innovative method has been developed to allow for cathodic protection of the upper / new tank bottom in a double bottom tank. When two steel tank bottoms are in electrical contact with each other the lower tank bottom acts as an electrical shield to cathodic protection (CP) current external from the tank. By electrically isolating the new / upper tank bottom from the old tank bottom and old dead shell CP current can then flow right through the old tank bottom to cathodically protect the upper / new tank bottom. The old tank bottom and dead shell become essentially transparent. Non-conductive type release prevention membranes were required to be used in the past between the old tank bottom and upper / new tank bottom to prevent the galvanic affects of new steel / old steel corrosion. A conductive type of release prevention barrier can now be utuilized to provide leak prevention without the concern of new steel /old steel galvanic corrosion occuring between the two tank bottoms. Significant advantages occur by electrically isolating the upper / new tank bottom away from the old tank bottom and dead shell of which the most significant is that CP current can always pass through the old tank bottom eliminating the problems and concerns of consumed CP systems between the tank bottoms. Cathodic Protection data from two tanks incorporating this new and innovative method will be discussed.

Traditionally, a zinc-rich primer, epoxy midcoat and polyurethane topcoat have been the standard 3-coat solvent borne system used for coating structural steel, such as in the maintenance of bridges. This study describes the performance of waterborne acrylic coating systems in an accelerated testing protocol including corrosion resistance and cyclic weathering. A comparison of systems based solely on waterborne acrylic coatings, as well as hybrid systems (e.g., zinc rich primer with waterborne topcoats), to the industry standard will be discussed.

The failure assessment of the collapse of the Quebec Bridge in 1907 conducted by the Royal Commission is discussed in the following paper. The Quebec Bridge is a 987.5 m long; 29 m wide; and 104 m high riveted steel truss structure which collapsed not once but twice during construction. The reason for the bridge failure was attributed to member behavior and stability proved by experimental work conducted following the collapse by Royal Commission. The bridge was finally completed in 1917 and has been in operation since then. The lessons learned from the bridge collapse were pivotal in the advancement of engineering design, fabrication and formation of the two organizations, namely - the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in 1914 and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) in 1921. The author highlights the importance of validating the design criteria and specifications by material and load testing, conducting peer reviews, design control, and paying attention to details. The lessons learned reinforce the need to establish and monitor shop fabrication practices, inspection procedures and gates (witness, hold and review points) to safely complete the execution of any civil engineering project, be it onshore or offshore construction.
