The black mildew growth causes the temperature of the contents to rise and accelerates the loss of product through evaporation. Furthermore, cleaning mildew defacement on large storage tanks is very labor intensive and time consuming. For example, to clean a 40-foot-tall, 650,000-gallon tank can take a three-to-four-man crew with high pressure power washers an average of 2 hours to remove all mildew and fungus growth.


This paper will detail the development and performance verification testing of exterior mildew resistant coatings that do not rely heavily on zinc oxide and can combat the growth of aggressive strains of ethanol induced mildew.
