Designing facilities for CO2 transport and injection requires a thorough analysis of the relevant degradation modes. This includes such effects as wet upsets in nominally “dry” CO2 running ductile fracture in CO2 fluid stability of elastomers and low temperatures associated with CO2 depressurisation etc. If existing facilities are to be used an assessment of their integrity status with a view to CO2 service has to be performed as well.
A case involving such an analysis is described. Materials selection and corrosion control to mitigate potential threats to integrity are summarised. On this basis an outline is given of a framework that can serve to manage integrity in operation.
