Low solar absorbing (LSA) attributes are important for marine decking materials. Reduced solar heat absorption can not only improve the condition of living and working spaces beneath any deck, but also help protecting electronics and equipment. This article will review current LSA technologies and present a study on how to improve the solar reflectance and weather resistance of epoxy marine decking.
Zinc rich coatings have long been used in the protective coatings industry as one of the primary means of steel substrate protection against corrosion. The primary protection mechanism has historically been galvanic sacrificial loss of zinc metal and the simultaneous formation of protective zinc oxides and salts. Various standards and customer specifications exist to ensure that the coating will provide the necessary corrosion protection for the life of the asset.

Since the inception of Epoxy Passive Fire Protection (EPFP), the industry has depended upon systems that require mesh reinforcement. The addition of this mesh adds at least $3.72 USD/sq. ft. to the applied systems. To avoid any risk of failure when exposed to fire reinforcement mesh must be correctly installed in accordance with the product’s certification and type approvals.
Internal coatings stress (ICS) develops in coatings applied to a rigid substrates. During drying, volume changes due to solvent loss and/or cure induces stresses in the films. Differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of the coating and substrate also affect the ICS. ICS affects the interfacial adhesion and results in delamination once the stress exceeds the force of adhesion.
