Of the most severe operations in the oil and gas industry are operations under high pressure and high temperatures where pressures and temperatures exceed 1000 psi and 212°F (100°C). Such operations may contain a variety of chemical constituents such as CO2 and H2S gases, hydrocarbons, and water. To address corrosion issues, materials engineers look into either upgrading to expensive alloys or use protective coatings.

Such operations may contain a variety of chemical constituents such as CO2 and H2S gases, hydrocarbons, and water. To address corrosion issues, materials engineers look into either upgrading to expensive alloys or use protective coatings. However, selection of protective coatings for such environments could be challenging. This paper investigates suitability of coating systems of different chemistries for high pressure, high temperature environment.
It is fair to say that maintenance in the worldwide oil and gas industry has changed dramatically over the past ten years. Facility owners are more than ever looking to reduce shutdown times, to improve plant efficiency and to extend plant lifetimes. With this comes the increased industry understanding about corrosion under insulation (CUI) with its deleterious impact and the ongoing desire for pragmatic high performance and cost-effective coating solutions.

The In-Situ internal coating is a viable alternative for pipeline rehabilitation of corrode pipe and cost effective compared to replacement with new pipelines.
In the oil and gas industry there is information on current fundamental training for contractors and certification programs that cover industry standards and practical aspects of selecting, specifying and using coatings safely, effectively and economically to protect structures in harsh oil and gas atmospheric environments. These certification programs are for both inspectors and contractors that provide quality assurance/quality control on industrial coating projects. Once implemented with a properly well-written specification for a specific substrate (steel, metal, previously coated), ensures a quality project for the owner.
