This paper will discuss the effectivity of ranking the crude pipelines due to their product corrosivity based on certain parameters such as corrosion coupons, cleaning pig deposit sampling analyses, microbial activity and previous ILI records.
Kuwait Oil Company is the national organization responsible for exploration production and exporting the crude oil for the State of Kuwait. As part of the Company’s expansion to increase the production the mileage of transfer and export crude pipelines along with other pipelines such as gas condensate and water have grown to approximately 6000 Km (3730 miles) as of 2016 whereas the crude pipelines consist approximately 25% of the total length.Inline inspection (ILI) is one of the main assessment tools for piggable pipelines; however it requires significant budget resources flow requirements and time. As per the company’s protocol new crude pipelines are generally due for ILI after ten (10) years of service unless it is suspected for high internal corrosion indications detected by the online internal corrosion monitoring or sampling analyses. The present paper will discuss on the effectivity of ranking the crude pipelines based on the risk assessment studies in order to establish a guideline to prioritize the ILI schedule. The risk assessment studies shall include the product corrosivity internal corrosion coupons readings cleaning pig deposits’ sample analyses microbial activity previous ILI records and high consequence area.
