The composition of corrosion inhibitors used in the Oil and Gas industry are predominantly based on multiple components. It is highly desired that all the components present in a corrosion inhibitor will interact synergistically. Synergistic corrosion inhibitor mixtures will improve performance and reduce the minimum effective inhibitor concentration, which is key particularly for subsea applications. Additionally, subsea applications in the North Sea, the Norwegian shelf and other areas of the world require corrosion inhibitors to follow strict environmental regulations. In this work, the application of molecular modeling by using the frontier orbital principle for the screening and selection of prospective green multicomponent corrosion inhibitors is reported. It is also shown how this quantum-chemistry based approach can expedite corrosion inhibitor development.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns and operates the vast majority of the countries lock and dam structures for inland navigation. The large steel gates on these structures are subjected to a severe impact and abrasive environment while in immersion by debris such as timber, ice, steel drums, etc. High VOC vinyl resin coatings have historically been the best available coatings for these structures in this environment but have exhibited very poor performance at the water line where the impact and abrasion is at its worse.

Laboratory testing of corrosion inhibitors under high temperature high pressure (HTHP) conditions is challenging. HTHP testing has been traditionally performed in closed systems with fixed liquid/gas volume and testing results are usually influenced/compromised by the accumulation of ferrous ions and corrosion products. The aim of the work is to optimize corrosion inhibitor testing conditions at HTHP to generate results of better reliability. The corrosion of carbon steel by CO2 at HTHP was assessed using small working electrodes of large liquid volume-to-sample surface area in autoclaves. The effect of CO2 partial pressure was also investigated. The blank and inhibited corrosion rates were monitored by linear polarization resistance (LPR) and the morphology of coupon surface was measured by vertical scanning interferometry (VSI). The testing results were deemed to be more representative of the field service environment when the amount of ferrous ions and corrosion products was reduced due to the usage of small working electrodes.

Impact of Corrosion Growth on Effective Flaw Dimensions

This paper summarizes the results of a sensitivity study conducted on corrosion clusters on a steel pipeline, specifically (1) the change in cluster effective length as the individual anomalies that make up the cluster grow and (2) the effect of changes in effective length on the remaining life calculated using deterministic methods. Two growth scenarios are considered: clusters that grow at the same rate along the cluster versus clusters that grow at a depth-based corrosion growth rate (e.g., deeper areas grow faster than shallower areas). The study shows that, in both scenarios, the effective lengths of long clusters shrink with growth. Examples demonstrate the impact of the results for a semi-elliptically shaped anomaly. The change in effective length and the corresponding change in critical or maximum depth led to an increase in calculated remaining life of 20% to 40% for the cases studied.

Corrosion induced by microorganisms is an already known fact that affects, among other heavy industries, the oil and gas sector. Its understanding and deep knowledge can avoid material and physical damage to those involved in the related processes. Molecular tools may help to mitigate these possible damages; however, studies are needed to understand molecular mechanisms involving microbial activity, especially the transcription of important enzymes such as sulfite reductase (dsrAB) which may be involved inthe corrosive process. mRNA extraction and cDNA synthesis were performed to quantify gene expression. Also, the enzyme production quantification by molecular techniques and H2S analysis were conducted to check dissolved gas concentration through potentiometric titration. It was possible to infer that availability of carbon sources and its complexity may increase bacterial metabolic activity, especially in the presence of lactate that, in this study, showed an increase in gene expression and H2S production compared to a variety of carbon sources and a control sample.
