Increasing the lifetime of J55 tubing by improving steel metallurgy – laboratory and field tests achievements

Mariana Salcu – OMV Petrom SA ROMANIA Exploration and Production
Development Business Unit
Institute for Research and Technology Campina

ABSTRACT

This project started with our field problems wear and corrosion of the J55 tubing premature and repeated failures occurred in many field clusters respectively in different environments and under various operating conditions. The extended research work has combined the field- proven testing experience with the laboratory large portfolio of expertise.

When a failure has occurred our primary objective was to establish the root cause the specific reasons and how the situation could be prevented.
Detailed failure analyzes have been carried out revealing the following most frequent damage situations: pure corrosion pure wear and combinations of wear and corrosion (assisted at times by erosion).

Over time petroleum engineers have solved many technological issues but the ones related to the metallurgical aspects allowing the occurrence of failures in operating a specific piece of equipment in our case the J55 tubing.

The technical aim of our Laboratory was to select a more suitable carbon steel type for the Petrom operating and environment conditions from the available range of carbon steels used for the J55 tubing resistance class the use of which along with the specific inhibition programs can lead to tubing failure rate decreasing.
Our target is to remain within the J55 tubing resistance class according to API and Company Specifications.

The tubing field failures macro and micro investigated in the laboratory together with the material tests revealed that structure is directly correlated to the technological and mechanical properties of the material.
After studying several variations of steel structure resulted from different metallurgical status respectively chemical composition and heat treatment we decided to change the type of steel from ferrite – pearlite to pearlite – ferrite.

The laboratory research conclusions were sustained by field trials where by using J55 tubing manufactured according to the laboratory steel design the life time improved from an average of 45 – 80 days to a minimum 220 days for the most aggressive conditions. On a large scale the tubing is still operating after 650 days.
