Cathodic Disbondment (CD) testing has historically been performed on protective coatings in order to assess the resistance of damage to a coating when exposed to cathodic polarization. Unfortunately there is no broadly accepted high temperature CD testing standard in the pipeline industry. Broadly disparate durations electrolyte types potentials electrolyte temperatures and sample testing temperature characterize the varying methods and practices currently used. This paper reviews various critical factors that will affect the high temperature CD behavior of a FBE based pipeline coating highlighting a need of developing a definitive high temperature CD testing procedure that is stable understood easy to run (with the correct equipment and experience) and provides reproducible results. Results of a real offshore pipeline project are presented and a testing protocol is proposed.
