It is well understood that environmentally-friendly production chemicals are required in the industry particularly in regions such as the North Sea where environmental criteria for application is considered to be the global standard. Efforts are now underway to phase-out substances in the North Sea based on PBT properties of the chemicals per a defined set of guidelines and level of priority so replacement products which meet environmental criteria for application are seen as high priority for chemical supplier and producer alike. An on-going research effort in the area of corrosion inhibition has been underway to develop high performance products for challenging systems which suffer not only from high temperatures and pressures but also high shear. This work will detail the development process and field application of a new chemistry designed specifically to replace an incumbent product affected by the 2012 Level 2 UK National Plan criteria. The work outlines the systematic studies of corrosion inhibition under conditions of high pressure high temperature and high shear improvement in emulsion tendency and separation and optimization of key active components with improved environmental fate for overboard discharge.
