Preparing hot dipped galvanizing that have been protected in accordance with ASTM A123 “Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products” for primer application require certain surface preparation techniques that will not compromise the galvanized layer yet allow the primer to bond to ensure a compatible surface for the intumescent fire resistive material (IFRM). The thickness of the water-based IFRM was determined by the massivity of the steel member.
