From Standard to Certification: Evolution of the Coating Application Specialist Program

Recognizing the need to elevate craft workers’ skills within the industrial coatings industry, the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) became involved in the development of the published SSPC ACS 1/NACE No.13 Joint Standard and the Body of Knowledge contained within. Since the development of the joint standard, the IUPAT has taken advantage of the opportunities afforded by the standard and remained committed to ensuring that its members are properly trained and certified as prescribed by the industry standard.

The purpose of this paper is to chronicle the evolution of the Certified Coating and Lining Application Specialist and the deliberate steps the IUPAT has taken in recent years to deliver to its members and the industry the curriculum, instruction and Certification procedures designed to meet the requirements for a Level II certified Coating and Lining Application Specialist. Furthermore, this paper will discuss the development of a new United States Department of Labor recognized apprenticeable occupation; Coating Application Specialist (CAS), which is co-sponsored by the IUPAT’s Finishing Trades Institute and the Finishing Contractors Association to meet the changing needs of the industry and the affiliates they serve.
