The mechanical damage caused by sand particles impacting the surface exposing bare metal to an environment saturated with corrosive agents such as Carbon dioxide (CO2) Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and Acetic acids (HAC). The paper focuses on characterizing the erosion corrosion using Acoustic Emission (AE) by studying the influence of particles impact angle using AE signal.Special device is designed to study AE signal at various impact angles in pure erosion and erosion corrosion environments using submerged impingement jet (SIJ). Experiments are carried at 15° 30° 45° and 90° impact angles. Other parameters such as flow velocity solution temperature and sand loading are controlled for both environments.Pure erosion environment is where the effect of corrosion is suppressed by Nitrogen (N2) saturated environment at pH 7.00. The AE signal is found to be consistent with established erosion models i.e Finnie Bitter and Hutchings where the highest AE signal and mass loss corresponded to cutting damage that occurs at low to medium impact angles.A CO2 saturated environment at a pH 5.00 is used to simulate erosion corrosion environment. The results indicate that the highest mass loss due to corrosion does not occur at the same impact angle as the highest mass loss due to pure erosion. The particle damage mechanisms is analyzed with the help of CFD model the analysis suggested that possible influence of impact angle on the synergistic effect of corrosion on erosion and the AE signal.Correlation between AE signal and mass loss at pure erosion environment is proposed however the same is not possible at erosion corrosion environment because of the synergistic effect of corrosion on erosion.Keywords: Erosion Corrosion Erosion-Corrosion Acoustic Emission.
