Energy refining and distribution is a key component of modern infrastructure. While there are many different forms of damage seen in piping systems corrosion/erosion is one of the primary concerns of operators due to heavy use of steel in pipeline systems to the expectations for long life and to increasing age of assets. Steel pipelines whether in facility process or in transmission lines are vulnerable to both internal and external corrosion damage which can result in deterioration of the piping system. As a result there is a need for regular inspection of steel pipeline for corrosion/erosion damage on both the external and internal surfaces. In order to ensure a continued and safe operation of pipeline systems pipeline operators must invest in regular inspection of their piping systems by a variety of methods including visual inspection inline inspection (ILI) and traditional NDI based techniques. This results in intermittent inspection of the pipeline and increased operating costs. Alternately by utilizing Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems pipeline operators can monitor pipelines on a continuous rather than intermittent basis and drive toward more cost effective Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) of their systems. In response to this need Acellent has introduced the Real-Time Active Pipeline Integrity Detection (RAPID) system. This guided-wave-based detection system enables automated detection localization and quantification of corrosion damage over entire sections of a pipeline including estimates of the critical parameter of wall thickness loss. The automated area monitoring capabilities of this technology give it a significant advantage over existing installed technologies which either rely on limited measurements at a single point or cover large sections but only provide limited information such as an averaged wall loss or require highly trained inspectors for data analysis.RAPID consists of Acellent Technologies SMART Layer® sensors hardware and algorithms that provide a tailored solution for pipeline corrosion detection. This technology operates by transmitting the ultrasonic waves intermittently through the piping structure between multiple pairs of actuators and receivers and monitoring the waveforms for significant changes that are caused by damage. Once a potential damage event has occurred the system quantifies the degree of change in the signal as well as the sensor/actuator pairs that the change is associated with. Using these factors the system then localizes and quantifies the damage in the structure. The robust nature of this damage detection system means that it is widely applicable across multiple types of pipeline structures and materials without being heavily influenced by factors such as pipe diameter or wall thickness.Following a successful demonstration of the basic functionality of the RAPID system Acellent Technologies in partnership with Chevron is working to assess and to validate the ability of RAPID to accurately quantify wall thickness loss independent of pipe geometric variable such as diameter and wall thickness. These tests involved a multi-coupon study of the ability of the RAPID system to accurately estimate the depth of a corrosion damage defect on different pipe wall thicknesses and diameters. This testing showed that the RAPID system accurately quantifies the depth of corrosion on a pipe sample with minimal effects due to variations in wall thickness and pipe diameter. These tests demonstrated the feasibility of the RAPID system for the detection and quantification of corrosion on piping systems.
