In the last decade formulation of coatings used for steel structures have experienced major changes. These changes were mainly related to environmental concerns (green products) and a will of enhancing workers’ safety by the reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) content. In order to update the coatings used by Hydro-Quebec investigation and evaluation of different coating systems used mainly for lattice tower and steel pole (above ground) were performed. The coatings evaluated were chosen based on paint companies’ recommendations and on specific needs of the utility. Twenty one coating systems were included in an accelerated aging study. To represent different situations encountered in the field coatings selected were applied on three different substrates aged galvanized new steel and rusted steel using the appropriate surface preparation for each one. Testing was done according to cyclic test as per ASTM D5894. For ease of evaluation the coatings were divided into four main chemical families namely: epoxy polyurethane alkyd and elastomeric. This paper presents the approach that was used and the results obtained. As some of the coatings tested presented anti graffiti’s characteristics a laboratory experiment to test different graffiti medias and different cleaners was also conducted. These results are presented in this paper.
