Evaluation of a Cr-Mo Type P110 Steel for Application in Mild Sour Environments Weiji Huang Marcus Asmann Stefanie Asher* ExxonMobil Development Company Houston Texas *ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company Houston Texas Many wells are originally designed for sweet service but are exposed to mild sour service environments due to unexpected natural sour reservoir conditions or reservoir souring. The presence of H2S requires that sweet service materials such as P110 be evaluated to determine fitness for service under these conditions. A test program was designed to numerically evaluate the sour fracture toughness KISSC of a Cr-Mo type P110 using TM 0177 method D in various mild sour environments. The results show that differences in KISSC of P110 tested at 75°F and 35°F were insignificant. The increase of KISSC of P110 with decreasing H2S partial pressure at a fixed pH was marginal. The Klimit was also obtained at selected H2S partial pressures pH and temperatures. The slope of KISSC vs. Kapplied is flat indicating that an increase in arm displacement does not significantly increase the KISSC. The test data was used to determine the service limits of Cr-Mo type P110 in mild sour environment which can be used to evaluate material fitness for service.
