Epoxy Tank Linings Cure Response During Cold Winter Months; Ready for Immersion Service?

Tank lining products are necessary for protection of infrastructure and commodities to ensure daily business operations continue smoothly. They are expected to protect the tank from corrosion and chemical attack while maintaining the purity of the tank’s contents; ultimately keeping people and the environment safe from an accidental discharge. Rigorous laboratory testing programs and field trials are conducted to instill confidence the right product is recommended for each task.

However, other than the lining of tank cars and other relatively small tanks in a controlled environment shop setting, most tank lining work is done in the field where the environment changes throughout the year and often throughout the day, making every cure scenario impossible to duplicate on a laboratory scale. Winter months in particular create extreme conditions as product viscosities increase upon cold temperature exposure which in turn adversely effects rates of polymerization can drastically decrease. Accurate assessment of cure for an applied product is critical for the performance of the lining when returning to service. An analytical investigation, in-situ laboratory testing, and a field assessment were investigated as a means to predict the impact cold conditions can have on epoxy-based linings and understand when cured for service is reached.
