Effect of Impurities on the Corrosion Performance of Carbon Steel in Carbon SequestrationKanimozhi.K.R1 Shyamala.R2* and Sankara Papavinasam31Department of Chemistry Sri Krishna College of Technology Coimbatore.2Department of Chemistry Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and HigherEducation for Women Coimbatore. *Email: shyamala1951@gmail.com3 Independent Consultant Canada.ABSTRACTThe scrubbing of CO2 by chemical absorption is the realizable and best near-term option for CO2 capture from power plants. The CO2 captured from various sources may contain many impurities depending on the process and capture technology. Contamination of CO2 can have potentially terrible consequences as it can cause major changes in the property behavior of the gas in the pipeline. Monoethanolamine (MEA) is the most widely used alkanolamine solvent for absorption-based carbon dioxide capture process for greenhouse gas reduction from industrial flue gas streams. During the scrubbing processes there is a possibility for MEA to get into the CO2 transportation pipeline along with CO2 as an impurity. Therefore in this paper the corrosion behavior of pipeline material API 5LX60 in the presence and absence of impurities (MEA) in CO2 environment under simulated flow conditions were studied and compared. Corrosion behavior of API 5LX60 was evaluated by using Rotating Cage and the corrosion rates were determined by mass loss measurements. The result obtained reveals that the presence of amines likes MEA causes a significant decrease in the corrosion rate. Surface analytical techniques (SEM and EDS) were used to analyze the corrosion product formed on the metal surface.Keywords- Monoethanolamine CCS network CO2 sequestration Carbon steel corrosion CO2 Corrosion Rotating Cage.
