Development of Test Sites in Alaska to Study Atmospheric Corrosion Using Adjustable Test Racks

In colder regions, heavy snowfall and pronounced freeze-thaw cycles introduce complexities to the established paradigms governing atmospheric corrosion. To elucidate the mechanisms of atmospheric corrosion under Arctic conditions, four distinct corrosion test sites were established in Alaska, each representing a unique corrosive environment. Each site was equipped with a modern, multi-angle corrosion exposure test rack coupled with an auxiliary weather station. Two additional multi-angle racks are introduced, offering enhanced flexibility and efficiency in research deployments. Innovation is in the design of modular corrosion test racks that can be adjusted to three different exposure angles. Within these setups, five different metal alloy specimens were exposed at three different angles and different lengths of time. Following exposure, the specimens underwent analysis to determine corrosion rates and weather parameter correlations.
