51315-6114-Development of Cast Alumina-Forming Austenitic Stainless Steel Alloys for Use in High-Temperature Process Environments

There is significant interest in the development of alumina forming creep resistant alloys for use in various industrial process environments. It is expected that these alloys can be fabricated into components for use in these environments through centrifugal casting and welding. Earlier studies have outlined the development of wrought versions of Alumina Forming Austenitic (AFA) alloys. These alloys achieve good high-temperature oxidation resistance due to the formation of protective Al2O3 scales while multiple second-phase precipitation strengthening contributes to excellent creep resistance. This work will summarize the results on the development of cast AFA alloys. Oxidation resistance and creep properties have been evaluated in the as-solidified condition and compared as a function of alloy composition over the temperature range of 650oC to 800oC in laboratory scale heats. Most promising alloy has been centrifugally cast and selected oxidation and creep properties of centrifugally cast tube material will also presented.
