A new 30% chromium-containing material known as INCONELĀ® Filler Metal 52MSS was invented and patented by Special Metals Welding Products Company and AREVA. This alloy has been thoroughly evaluated for resistance to PWSCC (primary water stress corrosion cracking) DDC (Ductility Dip Cracking) and hot cracking by the transvarestraint and longitudinal varestraint tests Strain-to-Fracture tests and mechanical tests. Testing has shown 52MSS provides greater than 4x higher DDC resistance than any other nickel alloy filler metal tested. While improving DDC resistance 52MSS has retained similar resistance to hot cracking seen in previous alloys such as 52M giving it excellent weldability. Research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and KAPL has shown that 52MSS provides outstanding resistance to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). Additional work has shown that welds made with 52MSS provide about 10% greater tensile properties in the as-welded condition over conventional products and post weld stress relief at 1150oF(621oC) provides tensile values in excess of 105ksi and 0.2% offset yield strength values in excess of 70ksi.
