Corrosion Resistance and Anodizability of Recycled Aluminum Alloys: Effect of Fe and Mn

The manuscript reports about the corrosion resistance and anodizability of a family of recycled EN AC-43200 Aluminum alloys comprising a different Fe/Mn content. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), metallography and electrochemical noise measurements (ENM) are used to study the correlation between the microstructure of the investigated materials, the anodizability of the alloy and the corrosion protection capability of the obtained anodic layers. It is demonstrated that the presence of acicular Iron-based intermetallic precipitates within the alloy matrix, together with a high surface Silicon concentration is responsible for a poor thickness homogeneity of the obtained anodic layers and a poor corrosion resistance. The detrimental effect of Iron can be mitigated by the addition of Manganese which acts as a precipitate-shape modifier thus enabling the growth of homogeneous and protective anodic layers. The manuscript provides key information to be used in the selection of materials for future applications based on recycled cast Aluminum/Silicon (AlSi) alloys.
