Construction of a light-rail extension paralleling an Interstate Highway necessitated crossing five large diameter water pipelines. Because of the high consequence of pipeline failure in the transit corridor light-rail construction included retrofit casings with box culverts and cathodic protection of the pipelines. Cathodic protection performance was found to vary with track detail. This paper provides operating data and addresses findings pertinent to the design and operation of the impressed current systems in regard to automatic rectifier control placement of reference cells and placement of anodes current requirements and current distribution for stray current control.
