51313-02556-Corrosion and Scaling in Wet Scrubbing Equipment of Superheated Geothermal Well IDDP-1 in Iceland

The IDDP-1 well in the Krafla geothermal field in Iceland is the first well in the Icelandic deep drilling project (IDDP). The superheated steam from the well is extremely hot and presently shows temperatures up to 450°C at a pressure over 120 bar at the wellhead. The IDDP-1 steam contains acid gas (HCl and HF) and is highly corrosive when it condenses. Different pilot studies were setup to investigate the usability of the superheated steam for power production. This included a wet scrubbing experiment where the wet scrubbing of the steam was performed at 10 bar and 180°C. The spraying chamber of the wet scrubbing system was made out of Inconel 625 material and the mixing zone of 254 SMO other parts of the system such as steam and moisture separators and steam pipelines (situated before and after the mixing zone) were carbon steel materials. The results showed that the acid gas in the steam can effectively be scrubbed from the steam with brine condensate or cold ground water. After the wet scrubbing experiment the equipment was inspected for corrosion and scaling. The inspection involved visual inspection of the equipment and chemical composition analysis of corrosion scale and scaling materials on the equipment material. Lump of scaling material was found in a narrow section of the scrubbing equipment that was close to blocking the exit of the equipment. Microstructural analysis of the corrosion scale and scaling products were also performed. This paper reports these results and includes discussion regarding the results and material selection for the IDDP-1 geothermal environment.
