Soluble salts may be transferred to a steel bridge or other structure as an airborne aerosol (generally from marine or industrial sources), wind-blown debris, and debris transferred from vehicles. Perhaps the most significant source of soluble salts on bridges is from de-icing materials. Once on the structure, salts may become incorporated into corrosion scale, poultice, or crevices.

Cloud computing provides a reliable and robust infrastructure for users to remotely store and access huge amount of data. However, data integrity in the cloud is a major security concern for data owners no longer physically possess their sensitive data. To mitigate this challenge, remote data integrity has been proposed as a mechanism to enable data owners to verify the correctness of their outsourced data. The remote verification process needs to be done with reduced communication, computation, and storage overhead.
Remote monitoring is becoming an increasingly more accepted way of gathering data from test stations. Not only because the value of having continuous data often exceeds that of performing spot-wise measurements in time, but also because the cost of collecting data manually is getting higher. Still, regulations require annual surveys to document the safe operation of pipeline CP systems.
The exterior metal of the 777 South Flagler Drive office building in West Palm Beach Florida was tired and worn when the owner decided to renew the project. They had over the years, tried conventional products without the desired long term result. That is when they called in a specialty exterior metal coatings applicator and a coatings company that has both a proven product and track record of long term exterior coatings and glass products.
In the 1920's the Ford Motor Company commissioned architect Albert Kahn to design regional automobile assembly plants. The largest on the West Coast was built in Richmond CA. With over 500,000 square feet of floor space under one roof it is still today the largest single building on San Francisco Bay. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake this National Historic Building was severely damaged to the point that it could not be occupied. This paper tells the tale of how due to incredible time restraints an Olympian effort was needed to retrofit and restore this national treasure to a usable commercial building.
Major bridge rehabilitation projects may include painting of the steel superstructure in addition to deck replacement, expansion joint improvements, bearing replacement, etc. This paper will review the scheduling of the coatings work during a bridge rehabilitation project and how the order of coatings work affects the project schedule, cost, and quality.
Metal curtain wall and extrusions in prominent office buildings may need to be repainted either because the original factory applied finishes have dulled or because the owner wants to give the building a fresh look. Many monumental buildings are constructed with factory painted aluminum or steel cladding (curtain wall) and window extrusions. These buildings need to be repainted with field applied coatings that match the appearance and durability of the factory finishes.
Attendees will be provided an overview and understanding of the problems associated with concrete deterioration in water and wastewater treatment facilities. Information regarding surface preparation, material selection and application methods will be presented.
Thermally sprayed aluminium (TSA) has successfully been used for corrosion protection for several decades. In this investigation different repair coatings have been studied with respect to performance when applied on both TSA and bare steel.
This case study shows how the City of Virginia Beach addressed concrete tank foundation deterioration and steps taken to reduce future deterioration, including moisture control, impact of Alkali Silica Reaction, concrete analysis and proper surface preparation, coatings applications and inspection.
