In a joint project Petrobras and Statoil have studied corrosion and corrosion prediction of CO2 / H2S corrosion of carbon steel. Similar autoclave systems were built up in laboratories in Brazil and Norway. The purpose of the testing has been to generate data for predicting corrosion in CO2 / H2S systems. Techniques that have been employed are traditional weight loss measurements LPR measurements and AC Impedance using rotating electrodes. In addition the sulphide films formed during the testing and the corrosion morphology have been studied. When the testing started it became obvious that short-term testing did not give realistic corrosion rates using standard weight loss measurements. AC-impedance and the LPR technique give more information about the time dependence of the corrosion process. In order to establish the stable corrosion rates long term multi-duration testing must be used. This paper reviews the methodology used to understand the corrosion and generate the data for the prediction model.
